Fraser Coast:
Fraser Island, the main attraction in the region is the world’s largest sand island. Fraser Island is a feast of spectacular scenery, bushwalking and 4WD driving along low-tide beaches.
Rainbow Beach, famous for its coloured sand cliffs is the jumping off point by ferry to Fraser Island. South of Rainbow Beach is the Cooloola Section of the scenic Great Sandy National Park. Visiting Tin Can Bay provides the rare delight of seeing tame dolphins swim to the Tin Can Bay boat ramp marina. Hervey Bay is the renowned home of whale-watching. Approximately 3000 Humpback whales swim past Hervey Bay every year between late July and the end of October.
Whitsunday Coast:
Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour are the jumping off points for the magnificent Whitsunday’s. The renowned Whitsunday region in Queensland includes the islands and the mainland towns and access to the scenic 74 Whitsunday islands. The spectacular Great Barrier Reef (one of Australia’s World Heritage Areas) and many of the islands’ fringing coral reefs are the most extensive reef system in the world.
Seven of the Whitsunday Islands are developed with tourist resorts but many are uninhabited and provide scenic bushwalking and basic camping sites.
Long island, predominantly National Park is the closest resort island. Hook Island, the second largest has good beaches and excellent diving and snorkelling. The one kilometre long Daydream Island, the closest of the resort islands is popular amongst day trippers.
South Molle Island with its numerous walking tracks and spectacular look-outs is known for its prolific bird-life (curlews and lorikeets).Hayman Island is the closest to the outer Barrier Reef and is famous for its luxurious resort. Whitsunday Island (which has no resort), largest of the Whitsunday’s has good bushwalking, snorkelling and features the scenic Whitehaven beach.
